May 1 is the deadline for Adding/Dropping Projects – Log in to 4-H Online and double check the projects you are enrolled in by May 1.  If you are not enrolled in the project you will NOT be able to enter that project at the fair. The community leaders and the Extension Office WILL NOT be able to make these changes.  If you have not yet enrolled for this year, you MUST enroll in 4-H Online to be official.

May 1 is the deadline for Horse ID paperwork – ALL horse papers are due in the Extension Office to be signed by May 1.  If you have a new horse, a new ID with picture is required. If you are using the same horse you did last year either bring in your papers or mail them and the ID will be signed and returned. - More info

May 1 is the deadline for Beef State Nominations – This includes market steers and market heifers.  All nominations must be submitted on the updated 2018 forms, or they will not be accepted.  These forms AND important nomination updates can be found here.  Please make sure all fields of the declaration form and nomination form(s) are complete, as well as the forms and DNA envelopes being signed by all parties. Everyone is also encouraged to cross-reference the tag numbers between the DNA envelopes and the specie nomination forms. There is a checklist for each species attached as a second page to the 2018 forms; the checklist does not need to be submitted as it is only a reference tool for families. The Rookie Guide is also a great resource for families who are new to the state livestock nomination process.

Market swine, commercial gilt, market lamb, commercial ewe, ALL meat goat, and commercial heifer nominations are due by June 15.

Sheep, Swine and Goat Tagging: Wednesday, May 2 @ 6:00 p.m. at the Marion County Fairgrounds  NOTE: If your animals need tagged before May 2, bring them to Rickey at any time.  There will be a $75.00 trip charge for tagging done at your own farm.

Campference - Leadership Through the Ages

4-H Campference is for youth ages 12- 14 (before January 1, 2018), and will be held June 26-29 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others.  Register online by May 15!  More info

Volunteers Needed

In conjunction with Walk Kansas and The National Week of the Young Child, Tristen has planned a StoryWalk® in each community across our County.  This project is "an innovative and delightful way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children's book are attached to signs which are staked along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you're directed to the next page in the story."   Check out this flyer for the StoryWalk dates across Marion County. If you are interested in helping with this event (set-up/take-down and guiding families along the StoryWalk), please let us know by April 13th!

The Herington Public Library is seeking one or two 4-H Club members to help with a geology program.  This would look great in your Record Book!  The summer reading theme for Kansas Libraries is “Libraries Rock!”  Summer Reading programs are offered on Thursday mornings in May and June.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Children’s Librarian, Susan Mueller, at 785-366-6358.
